The Annual Ferry Safety and Technology Conference, sponsored by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association, will again feature new practical technologies and useful information in settings that are consucive to networking.
Vessels and Landings. There will special presentation on the materials by which ferries are made, aluminum and composites. The award winners of the international design competition for a Singapore strait ferry will present on their innovative designs. There will be a presentation on the ever more pressing issue of maintenance of ferry landings.
Real time weather on routes: Even as weather satellites are ever more advanced there is more need for groundtruthing of local weather in real time while at sea. How can operators themselves feed into the global maritime weather network.
Communication and Telematics: AIS has become the wonder child as more and more useful applications of AIS data are discovered for saving lives and improving efficiency. Operators and planners and design-builders will find this useful and policy makers will be presented with evidence to expand AIS use in ferries the world over.
Electric-spectrum ferries. Cities around the world, including NYC, are encouraging electric ferries. On a special panel, held jointly with TRB on Friday morning March 23 at the Staten Island Ferry HQ, operators, designers, builders and overseers will discuss what are the issues invlolved to make electric ferries happen. This will be followed by an on-water tour.
Exhibit: On the afternoon into early evening March 21 there will be an exhibit of new technologies; as per usual there will be coffee service followed by wine and beer reception.
